500 YEARS OF AMERICAN GRAPES AND WINES: A REMARKABLE JOURNEY

February 16-May 29, 2009

Curated by Professor Daniel T. Longone, this exhibition will feature books and ephemera that define the history of American wine making from early failures and disasters to ultimate emergence in the twentieth century of wines and a wine industry second to none.

The incongruous cast of characters and events prominent in this history include Thomas Jefferson, patriotic immigrants, Napoleon’s soldiers in Alabama, prohibitionists, Boston Brahmins and Madeira wine, John Locke, the American cocktail culture, and more.

Sponsored by the William Clements Library and the Culinary Historians of Ann Arbor.

Lecture by Prof. Longone: Sunday, May 10, 3-5pm in the Great Hall of the Clements.

The Clements Library is located at 909 South University Avenue, and is open Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 4:45 p.m. For further information please call 734-764-2347.
